Storm Of The Decade!

One of the top news stories of late has been the deluge of rain, high winds and tornados (!!) that California has been receiving with a string of winter storms since Monday.

With two storms giving us a total of 2.6" of rain at home since Monday, we're still high-and-dry. Same here at work, where the extent of the storm damage are a few errant wood chips littering the parking lot.

And speaking of water, the surf's been massive...

Too bad the runoff also makes the water quite polluted. Not that I have any business heading out in 18' waves (or 8' for that matter).

We're now just bracing ourselves for the next two which are supposed to pack a bigger punch. I'm just happy we don't live in an area prone to mudslides.

Okay, So It's Not Always Perfect Out Here

Weather screen shot from this morning shows that we're in for a cold & wet spell.

In fact it was chilly enough that I actually *gasp* turned the furnace on for about 15 minutes this morning. I will admit though, this little blast of (relatively) cool weather is a refreshing change from 72-and-sunny perfection that I've become accustomed to. It actually feels a bit more like winter. Well, maybe early autumn is more like it.

Heat Wave, Meet Wave Wave

Allie and I were taking this morning how neither of us *ever* check the weather anymore. It's been on PerfectWeather™ autopilot since the June Gloom belatedly moved out in early July. So after we talked about the weather - or lack of checking it - I checked the phone to see what's in store for Carlsbad the next few days.

Lookin' good - if a little on the toasty side. Might have to (gasp!) get the fans out.

One site I do check with relative frequency is the Surfline Surf Report...

At least this forecast changes from time to time over here. Combine this "heat wave" and bigger swells and I may just have to head on down to the beach after work one (or more) of these evenings.

Good Bye May Grey, Hello June Gloom

Living here I learned that May and June are not good times for out-of-towners to visit coastal California. During most of the months of May and June, the coast is enveloped in a dense marine layer. Unlike the winter marine layers, this one does not burn off by late morning.

My office in Vista, about 6 miles or so inland, is mostly spared of this phenomenon - more often than not it's been sunny and warm out there. Locally the dividing line of good to gloom is about El Camino Real, ~3 miles inland.

Storm Damage

As mentioned in yesterday's weather emergency post, we received about .75" of rain yesterday. For those in the Midwest, it's the SoCal equivalent of you guys getting, oh,  16" of wet snow.  People were crashing/flipping their cars (likely due to bald tires and dry-rotted wiper blades), while those that were moving chose to drive like grannies.  Thankfully I have a painless commute.

Anyway, here's the aftermath as viewed from my desk at work:

Weather Emergency

We have wood chips floating into the parking lot.  Stay calm people.

Rain?

It's funny but not too surprising. I used to check the National Weather Service and Weather Underground forecasts a few times per day back in Wisconsin. In the time we've been here in Carlsbad, I think I may have checked these sites a total of 5 times.

Having an iPhone is partly to blame, it's a few swooshes across the touch screen to access the weather, but the main reason I stopped checking is because the weather hasn't changed much.

It'll be nice to have a little rain.
