Oktoberfest und Pizza Port

So Carlsbad had it's annual Oktoberfest this weekend. We figured with the city's German heritage (it is named after an area in Germany after all), it'd be decent.

While there was a few things to keep the grrrl occupied. An antique fire engine:
safety first! she buckled up even though the truck wasn't moving
sweet grille, hey - what's that in there?

why she found a nice perch in there

Neighbor Braxton screamed too loud for my grrrls precious ears...
...but the hose made for a cool way to frame her face:
We decided that eating German food served from big foil pans (and under palm trees!) wasn't all that appetizing for us. So we only bought a few ride tickets so that Celeste and Braxton could play in one of those inflatable bouncy things:
After that we departed, but she was able to get a big more tree climbing in (it's been the summer of climbing trees)...
...and headed to the village...
sadly gumballs were not dispensed

...where we ended up at the delicious Pizza Port.
Some pirate-themed pinball was played...
...and a fantastic Pizza Laguna (topped w/ artichoke hearts, black olives, peppers and mushrooms) was served.
We caught the sunset at the State Beach and headed home. Another good day.

Thanks Roy!

My friend Roy from MadTown came by this evening, en route to bringing his son Craig to Camp Pendelton. I am fortunate that he also brought me a little sampler from America's Beer-er-Dairyland. A sixer of Spotted Cow (ambrosia - the drink of the gods) and 12 cans of Leinies (the elixir of life).

We took him and Craig to Pizza Port. All is well.

Thanks again Roy, don't be a stranger!

Mmm... Pizza Port

With the absence of true deep-dish Chicago-style pizza here in Carlsbad (well, at least for the next ten days until Grubby Pizza opens), we hit the 'Port.

iPhones + low light = fuzzy pix

Pizza Port has three locations in the area - downtown Carlsbad, Solana Beach and one in San Clemente (southern Orange County). Even though it was founded in 1987, it feels like a place from 1967. Crowded, noisy, and seating done via picnic tables, the Port serves up "tasty grub and grog" with a vintage surf decor. We ended up sharing our picnic table with two guys in their 20s.

A friend of mine, Adrien, turned us on to the joint as he had lived here years ago. Allie and I hit it back after moving here in September, but we took Celeste to her first visit tonight.

Being the only kid we've ever known to *not* like pizza, we simply told her we were going out to eat at "the Port" and that they had lots of choices. Well, she ended up settling for a small pizza (with pineapple and Canadian bacon - her first Hawaiian pizza) and ate most of it. And loved it. Allie and I chose spinach and artichokes on our pie.

Classic California-style doughy crust and (sadly) cut into squares, the Port dishes out a mean pizza. Multiple thumbs up.

Oh, the beer's pretty good too.
